I was on my morning hike the other day and there were tons of butterflies. I dunno, it must be “butterfly season” or something. As I was walking, I was watching them, fluttering up, down and around. All different types, colors, sizes – going from plant to plant, flower to flower, searching for whatever it is butterflies are in search of (pollen, right? or is that bees?). Anyhow…
Because my brain functions the way it does (Interpretation: I come up with the strangest questions), I got to wondering….does a butterfly REMEMBER being a caterpillar? Seriously, think about it. What if you were ohhhhh so tired, so you wrapped yourself up in the most silky, comfortable blanket in the whole wide world and took the best nap ever!! And then, woke up…..and you had WINGS and could FLY. Hellllloooo??!!!
So being me, I had to Google this and find out the answer. Guess what smarty pants? They DO remember (certain) things from being a caterpillar. This totally blew my mind. Ok, they maybe don’t know remember everything from their past life as a creepy, ground crawler, but they do remember adverse reactions to certain things and thus, in their new lives avoid those things.
It gave me a new found respect for butterflies. Not only are they lovely, but they’re smart. And let’s face it, we all know it’s very rare to find smart AND beautiful in the same package!!
Just thought I’d share this tidbit of super random info with ya’all.
